Going Green

Some facts to keep in mind when trying to reduce your “footprint”:

  • Animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined. [UN Food & Agriculture Org.]
  • Going vegetarian is more effective in reducing global warming than driving a hybrid car. [Univ. of Chicago]
  • Over half of the water used in the U.S. goes to raising animals for food. [Audubon Society]
  • 80% of agricultural land in the U.S. is use to raise animals for food. [USDA]
  • We feed 70% of the grain grown in the U.S. to farmed animals who will be killed and eaten. [Time Magazine]
  • Seven football fields worth of rainforest land are bulldozed every minute  to create more room for farmed animals. [Smithsonian Institute]
  • Grazing has contributed to the demise of 26% of federal threatened and endangered species. [USDA]
  • USDA’s Wildlife Services reported killing 1,642,823 wild animals at taxpayers’ expense in 2006 who may have killed or attacked livestock.
  • 50-90% of liveforms caught during fishing are not the target of the fishermen (e.g., sea turtles are caught, injured, and killed during shrimping)
